Frequently Asked Questions

Is cosmetic tattooing painful?

Consider it a tiny sacrifice to the beauty gods. The result? Tattooed perfection you can wake up with, but trust that we prioritize your comfort during every step of the process. We use advanced numbing techniques to minimize discomfort, ensuring a pleasant experience for all our clients.

How long do cosmetic tattooing results last?

At Glow we use semi permanent ink in the brows. This is what sets us apart! Most artists are still using carbon black in brows. Carbon may look good for a year, but all inks need a touch up every year or so. Carbon aka Organic ink will create a build up in brows, eventually meaning no more ink can fit in the dermis, this means they will eventually turn blue black, even for a light blonde.

Our ink will fade gracefully as the same color that was put into the brow. If they are not touched up in 2.5 years, the color will go away. This is a GOOD thing. Your wax, botox, spray tan, hair, nails, lashes, filler don’t last forever and neither should your brows.

Lip color will need a yearly touch up. Lash Enhancements (lash line tattoo) is the only area we put carbon black (nobody has ever complained that they’re lash line is too dark, therefore this can be forever).

What is the recovery process like?

Recovery time is minimal for most cosmetic tattooing procedures. You may experience slight redness or swelling immediately after, but this typically subsides within a few hours to a few days. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results.

*Please note, for 1 week after your appointment you cannot get your brows wet, be in direct sun, or sweat into tattooed area. We will provide shower visors to help in the shower.

How do I know if a cosmetic tattoo is right for me?

Here’s who typically makes an ideal candidate:

  • Those seeking a natural, yet defined look: If you desire effortlessly beautiful brows, lips, or lashes without the hassle of daily makeup application, cosmetic tattooing might be your perfect solution.

  • Daily makeup users: If you find yourself reaching for brow makeup, lipsticks or tints, or mascara every day, cosmetic tattooing can offer you the convenience of waking up with perfectly enhanced features, saving you time and effort.

  • Individuals seeking long-lasting results: Say goodbye to worries about makeup smudging off during the day or during various activities. With cosmetic tattooing, you can enjoy enhanced features that stay put, allowing you to confidently embrace your day without constant touch-ups.

What temporary conditions would disqualify me from a cosmetic tattoo?

At this time, individuals falling under the following categories are not considered candidates:

  • Temporary health issues: This includes individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those who have used Accutane within the past 13 months, and individuals currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

  • Use of blood thinners: If you are currently using blood thinners, cosmetic tattooing may not be advisable due to increased risk of bleeding and complications.

  • Recent botox treatment: If you’ve had botox within the last 8 weeks, it’s best to wait until this period has passed before considering cosmetic tattooing.

  • Current use of antibiotics: Individuals currently using antibiotics may need to wait until their course of treatment is complete before undergoing cosmetic tattooing.

Who should NOT consider a cosmetic tattoo?

While cosmetic tattooing is a wonderful option for many, there are certain conditions that may deem individuals ineligible for the procedure at this time:

  • Thin, fragile skin: Individuals with very thin or fragile skin may not be suitable candidates for cosmetic tattooing due to the risk of increased sensitivity and potential complications.

  • Transmissible blood disease: For your safety and the safety of others, individuals with transmissible blood diseases are advised against undergoing cosmetic tattooing to prevent the risk of transmission.

  • Allergy to iron oxide or nickel: If you have a known allergy to iron oxide or nickel, it’s important to avoid cosmetic tattooing as the pigments used may contain these substances, which could trigger an allergic reaction.

  • History of keloid scarring: Individuals with a history of keloid scarring may be at higher risk of developing keloids after cosmetic tattooing, making them unsuitable candidates for the procedure.

  • Diabetes: If you have diabetes, it’s recommended to seek advice from your doctor before considering cosmetic tattooing to ensure it’s safe for you given your individual health status.

  • Poor wound healing: Individuals who do not heal well from small wounds may not be suitable candidates for cosmetic tattooing, as the procedure involves creating small wounds to deposit pigment into the skin.

What should I do before my Cosmetic Tattoo Appointment?

To ensure the best possible results and your safety during your cosmetic tattooing appointment, please follow these pre-treatment instructions:

  • Avoid retin A/retinol use: Refrain from using retin A or retinol products for 7 days prior to your appointment, as they can increase skin sensitivity and interfere with the tattooing process.

  • Cold sore prevention for lip tattoo: If you’ve experienced cold sores, herpes, or fever blisters and are receiving a lip tattoo, it’s recommended to use prescription Valtrex for 5 days before and 5 days after treatment to minimize the risk of outbreaks.

  • Contact lens wearers: If you wear contact lenses and are receiving Lash Enhancement or Liner, please remember to bring a case and saline solution to your appointment.

  • Sunburn avoidance: Avoid sunburn at least one month prior to your appointment, as sunburned skin can be more sensitive and prone to complications during the tattooing process.

  • Botox restriction: Refrain from receiving botox injections within 8 weeks prior to your appointment, as this can affect the symmetry and placement of your cosmetic tattoo.

  • Alcohol avoidance: Avoid consuming alcohol 24 hours before your appointment, as it can increase blood flow and lead to more bleeding during the procedure.

  • Consultation for blood thinners: If you’re on blood thinners, it’s important to seek advice from your doctor before undergoing cosmetic tattooing to ensure it’s safe for you.

  • Caffeine limitation: Limit your caffeine intake to 8oz on the day of your appointment to help keep you comfortable during the procedure.

  • Hair washing: Please wash your hair on the day of your appointment, as you may need to lie down for an extended period during the procedure.

  • Supplement and painkiller avoidance: Refrain from taking multivitamins, fish oil, or painkillers until after your treatment, as they can thin the blood and increase bleeding.

  • Pre-appointment meal: Have a small meal before your appointment to help maintain your energy levels during the procedure.

What should I do after my cosmetic tattoo appointment?

Congratulations on your new cosmetic tattoo! To ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results, please follow these post-care instructions carefully:

  • Initial appearance: Your brows may appear bolder, more solid, and darker than their final healed look. Please refrain from fully judging the treatment area for the next 3 weeks as it undergoes the healing process.
  • Oxidation: Tomorrow, your brows may appear darker as they undergo oxidation. This is a normal part of the healing process.
  • Changes in appearance: Expect your brows and lips to go through various changes, including darkening, flaking, patchiness, and lightening. These changes are normal as long as you closely follow the post-care instructions provided.
  • Lymph fluid: Today, the treatment area may produce lymph fluid, a clear liquid. Wipe off this fluid with a damp tissue every hour. After each wipe, reapply the provided ointment using a q-tip, avoiding the use of fingers. Apply only a small amount, about the size of a grain of rice, to each brow. For eyes and lips, use as much ointment as necessary.
  • Ointment application: Beginning tomorrow, apply ointment to brows once a day with Aquaphor and more often with ointment for the next 6 days. For eyes and lips, apply ointment as needed, ensuring the area is not constantly moist.
  • Less is more: When applying ointment to brows, only use a rice grain size amount on each brow. Avoid over-application as it may cause color fading.
  • Wiping: Wipe with a wet cotton pad/tissue as often as necessary to clean the treated area.
  • Water protection: Keep brows dry for 7 days, eyes (lash line) for 4 days, and lips for 1 day. We will provide water protection visors.
  • Face washing: When washing your face, use a washcloth and gently wipe around the treated area instead of splashing with water.
  • Avoid sweating: For 7 days, avoid sweating into brows and lips. For liner tattoo, avoid crying for one week as the salt in sweat and tears can cause patchy color.
  • Sun protection: Protect all tattooed areas from direct sun exposure for at least 7 days.
  • Avoid makeup: Refrain from applying makeup to the tattooed area for 7 days after treatment.
  • Avoid touching: Do not touch the tattooed area unnecessarily to prevent infection.
  • Monitoring: If you notice anything unusual, including persistent redness, please contact us immediately.
